Volma Overton III is a 4th generation Austinite and a legacy source of local facts, fiction and folklore. Coupled with legacy knowledge is the love for the game of golf as three generations of Overtons have had impacts in the local and regional amateur golf scene. The other most notable legacy characteristic is his generational love for the city of Austin and desire to get involved to make a difference in our beloved local community.
After a short stint in L.A. and Phoenix chasing a dream as a stunt driver and pro golfer, Volma returned to Austin to become an international salesperson for a running equipment startup company, SPIbelt, created by his sister Kim Overton. Being with the company from inception in 2007, he received multiple salesman of the year recognitions in his 8 year involvement with the company.
After SPIbelt, Volma was in Austin full time once again and politics quickly became of interest. He wanted to get involved like the generations before but in order to be an effective representative of the community he knew proficient public speaking abilities would be necessary. In 2014, he joined the Austin Toastmasters Club or commonly referred to as “The greatest Toastmasters club in the known universe”. After rising to the ranks of Sergeant at Arms for consecutive terms, he continued to refine his speaking abilities. A couple years later becoming the President of the Club, an achievement he’s most proud of. Volma joined the City of Austin's CityWorks Academy in 2016 and finished with top in class status. The following year, he was selected to take part in the inaugural class of the ATXelerator program, a program with an advisory board of former Austin mayors, councilmembers and other community leaders. With these two foundational political accomplishments, Volma continued forward and furthered his community involvement.
In 2018, shortly after joining the East 12th St. Merchants Association, Volma became President of the nonprofit organization. Also that year he joined Evolve Austin, whose aim is to champion the Imagine Austin comprehensive plan. He was nominated the following year by the D1 Austin City Council Member to join the African-American Resource Advisory Commission, which he gladly accepted. In this most recent appointment to the Board of the Save Historic Muny District, Volma is happy to work towards ensuring the preservation of the iconic Lions Municipal GC (Muny).
